Locality, the Episcopate, and Canonicity: Reflections on Chambesy

In a recent article on aoiusa.org, George Michalopulos analyzes the current jurisdictional crisis within North America. He looks at the formation of autocephalous churches, the role of the metropolitan and its role within the episcopate, and the canonical claims of existing patriarchates regarding primacy within the so-called Diaspora. Given recent discussion about the issue of the “diaspora,” Michalopulos then delves into the theology of which autocephalous church has the authority to evangelize within such an area, how autocephaly is to be proclaimed, and the question of parallel dioceses in one city being evidence of schism.

The various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions in North America need “to get their act together” fast and establish one united American Orthodox Christian Church.

Christ did not want His Church to be divided into various ethnic and national divisions — with each one independent of the other — and neither should we today.
