Minnesota Icon Artist Finds Worldwide Audience

As a child attending her Russian Orthodox Church, Debra Korluka grew up surrounded by magnificent religious icons.

Today, the Stillwater artist helps to create or “write” such icons.

To the spiritual, icons — images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and feast days — are considered objects of veneration and important tools for worship.

“We believe the Holy Spirit guides the hand of the iconographer,” Korluka said. “Through living your life in the Church, the prototypes come to be developed … through research, holy tradition, information given us through scripture, writings of the Holy Father.”
