Artists See Images as Heavenly Portals

Chicago Tribune — As Anna Szyamanek daubed flecks of gold on her portrait of the Archangel Michael one recent Sunday, a stillness descended upon her mind and spirit, enabling her to commune with God.

Rather than call herself an artist, Szyamanek, 54, prefers to think of herself as a spiritual sojourner. Her fascination with the creation of religious icons, a tradition more commonly associated with Orthodox Christianity, has served to fortify her Roman Catholic faith.
