Ancient Russian Icon in New Jersey Draws the Faithful

ROCKY HILL — More than a hundred faithful gathered tightly in the Orthodox Church of St. Elizabeth on Tuesday evening to pray before an icon of tremendous significance to their faith.

Following in the footsteps of generations of the Russian Orthodox Christians, they came to worship before the Kursk Root icon as it visited the modest parish for the evening.

The icon of the Virgin Mary has been famous throughout Russian history, according to the parish’s the Rev. David Straut, since its discovery in 1295 in Kursk, Russia.
